The first event of my 5 to ride for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2015 has been confirmed for Sunday 26th April.
The good news is that I have secured my place in this event, the Etape Loch Ness, a cycle sportive taking place around the iconic Loch Ness, cycling 67 miles / 107 km around the loch on traffic free roads.
The 360° closed-road route around the loch starts and finishes in the Highland capital of Inverness. We must adhere to the minimum average speed of 13mph otherwise we might be picked up by the sweep bus (oh the ignominy). But the route will present a challenge with a tough 4.8 mile (9km) climb gaining 380m in height and at times with a gradient reaching 12%.
Macmillan Cancer Support are the official charity partner for this event. More than one in three of us will get cancer. For most of us it will be the toughest fight we ever face. And the feelings of isolation and loneliness that so many people experience make it even harder.
Macmillan are the nurses and therapists helping you through treatment. The experts on the end of the phone. The advisers telling you which benefits you’re entitled to. The volunteers giving you a hand with the everyday things. The campaigners improving cancer care. The community there for you online, any time. The supporters who make it all possible.
I am one of those supporters, doing my little bit to help in a way that I can.
With your help we can make a difference. Thank you.
