Lister Macmillan Cancer Centre Official Opening

Well it’s been a while since my last post here. I have stayed off the bike, primarily due to injury and a broken bike but now I am itching to get back out on the roads and to start training for my next fundraising venture.

The purpose of my last venture on the bike was to help raise funds for the new Lister Macmillan Cancer Centre at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, which had its official opening last Friday. I was very kindly invited along to this event by Macmillan.

The new centre, funded jointly by Macmillan Cancer Support and the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, has doubled the chemotherapy capacity of the hospital’s previous unit. The new building will reduce overcrowding and contains a dedicated information and support centre for patients and families, as well as two gardens for patients to relax in while undergoing treatment.

The Lister Macmillan Cancer Centre also provides:

  • consistent access to a team of Macmillan welfare benefits advisors who can help patients with their financial worries
  • a greater number of consultation rooms to allow patients more privacy
  • more working areas for Lister nurses and other clinical staff to prepare drugs, improving efficiency and reducing waiting times

This has been an enormous project between Macmillan Cancer Support and the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. Due to their hard work and the kind donations made to help the project, the brand new centre will be able to provide patients with the best possible environment for their cancer care.

But it doesn’t end there. The need to raise funds is continuous and ongoing as Macmillan is funded entirely by donations. Fundraising groups are vital to Macmillan. As well as raising over £7 million each year for people living with cancer, we raise awareness of who we are and what we do, helping Macmillan reach more people who need their help.

As well as attending group meetings, we help organise fundraising events with other group or committee members. You can also get involved with coordinating fundraising collections for Macmillan. Our groups organise:

  • Christmas parties
  • clothes swaps
  • coffee mornings
  • club nights / quiz nights
  • walks and bike rides
  • art shows and balls… and much, much more.

Indeed, work starts now on our next event, a Charity Ball in Stevenage on the 29th November.
